How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners (Revised & Updated Edition)For nearly a quarter century, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend has been the standard against which all other dog-training books have been measured. This new, expanded edition, with a fresh new design and new photographs throughout, preserves the best features of the original classic while bringing the book fully up-to-date. The result: the ultimate training manual for a new generation of dog owners - and, of course, for their canine best friends. The Monks of New Skete have achieved international renown as breeders of German shepherds and as outstanding trainers of dogs of all breeds. Their unique approach to canine training, developed and refined over three decades, is based on the philosophy that "understanding is the key to communication, compassion, and communion" with your dog. The importance of honest and effective communication with your dog is underscored throughout this guide, especially in the practical training exercises: a detailed, comprehensive, fully illustrated obedience course through which the monks lead you (and your dog) step-by-step. How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend covers virtually every aspect of living with and caring for your dog, including: Selecting a dog (what breed? male? female? puppy or older dog?) to fit your lifestyle Where to get - and where not to get - a dog Reading a pedigree Training your dog or puppy - when, where, and how The proper use of praise and discipline Feeding, grooming, and ensuring your dog's physical fitness Recognizing and correcting canine behavioral problems The particular challenges of raising a dog where you live - in the city, country, or suburb The proper techniques for complete care of your pet at every stage of his or her life In this new edition, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend has been expanded to encompass the latest equipment (e.g., retractable leashes, "invisible" fences); new trends in training and care (doggy day care, professional dog walkers, etc.); and dozens of new anecdotes and case studies, drawn from the monks' own experience, that bring to life the essential training concepts. In its scope, its clarity, and its authority, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend remains unrivaled as a basic training guide for dog owners. Like no other book, this guide can help you understand and appreciate your dog's nature as well as his or her distinct personality - and in so doing, it can significantly enrich the life you share with your dog.

Every once in awhile, a new camera comes out that genuinely fits the needs of beginning photographers who are looking for a step up from a point-and-shoot camera, and who are looking for affordability and excellent image quality. The most recent camera that fits that description is the Canon EOS Rebel T3/1100D. This is a great camera for anyone who wants to make the move from a compact point-and-shoot to a full-featured digital SLR camera. The EOS T3/1100D makes the transition to a digital SLR virtually painless with the simplified layout of controls on the back and top of the camera. Starting with the Mode dial, new Rebel photographers can choose to have the camera make almost all of the exposure decisions by choosing a scene, or automatic, mode such as Portrait, Landscape, or Sports mode. Alternately, they can take a bit more control using Creative Auto mode where they can adjust the background blur or sharpness setting, as well as selected other camera settings. In the semi-automatic modes such as P, Av, Tv, and A-DEP, the photographer can press the Q button for quick access to the most commonly used exposure settings and other camera options. Just use the cross-keys on the back of the camera to navigate to the settings you want to change, and then turn the Main dial to make the changes. And Canon includes the new guide that provides brief descriptions of controls and options when you’re using the camera menus. You can rate images using one to five stars, and then sort images for an in-camera slideshow based on the ratings. Slideshows can also be created using only still image or only videos. Despite the affordable price, Canon EOS T3/1100D photographers get full HD video that offers high-quality movies with no fuss or complicated settings to choose. Canon provides a capable video-editing program on the EOS Digital Solutions Disk that comes with the camera. You can add titles, stills to your movie, and you can convert the movie to black-and-white as well. Also if you need lighting for your video, the affordable new Canon 320EX flash unit features a bright LED light that is suitable for video lighting, and you can use it for up to 3.5 hours of continuous shooting. Canon didn’t skimp on features. The T3/1100D offers features found on higher priced cameras including Highlight Tone Priority to help preserve highlight detail, Auto Lighting Optimizer to automatically correct the appearance of some images, good control over the built-in and an accessory flash, live view shooting, a customizable “My menu” menu where you can register up to six of your most-frequently used menu items, and much more. All in all, the EOS Rebel T3/1100D is a great choice for any beginning photographer who is anxious to step into the creativity and fun of dSLR photography.
