Photography Site of the Day – Graflex.org

Graflex.org has information about Graflex cameras such as my Super Graphic as well as all the other Graflex models, such as the Anniversary and Crown graphics. The jewels of the site are the Technical Information, Speed Graphic FAQ, Articles, Cameras, and the Help Board. The Help Board is a useful discussion forum. Get familiar with your back button because there is a great amount of material on this site, but the navigation is a little lacking. Navigation issues aside, this site is worth many hours of study.

Classic Camera of the Week – Graflex Super Graphic

I’m guilty of not using my Super Graphic enough. Nice camera, built like a tank, capable of very nice 4×5 work. And here it sits.

This digital age is supposed to give us more time for things, but here I sit at my computer with my Super Graphic at my side and I haven’t the time lately to use it.

When I first bought it, I had to repair the rotating back. Maybe an hour of my time for a lot of convenience. Simple repair on a simple camera. It’s no wonder that these were so prevalent in their day.

It’s about time to crack open the 4×5 film in my freezer and get back to work. It’s funny. Even though I don’t use this camera nearly enough and they seem absolutely impractical in this digital age, I find myself driven to go to ebay and buy more. I love my Graphic.

Photography Site of the Day – Vieilalbum.com

This camera collector’s site, Vieilalbum.com, is quite nice. It is run by a Frenchman named Michel.

He has a short, but hopefully growing, section of techniques that he is building such as this one on How to Change the Cover Glass of a Daguerreotype.

I thought the page of pictures of the packaging from glass plates was a very nice touch.

He also has a pictorial guide to Leica camera models. Short and sweet. I like it.

The forum looks interesting, but I need to work on my French skills.

The only difficulty I had was with viewing the photo albums. I use firefox. With it, his photo albums displayed poorly. The pictures became a continuous horizontal row of pictures that required a excessive scrolling. I pulled it up in internet explorer and the site displayed beautifully. All in all, it’s a nice site.
