Nikon D4 Preview

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Jared Polin from FroKnowsPhoto.comgave this preview of the Nikon D4. It’s a very good preview from when he had a chance to see it at a show. He has me sold.

BTW, Polin’s site is well worth following. He has an engaging presence and seems to be genuinely passionate about what he does. He often features videos of himself with his grandma, Lil.

D-Movie Mode Video with National Geographic Traveler Photographer Bob Krist

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Since video is all the rage, I wanted to pass along this video of D-Movie Mode Nikon photography by Bob Krist. This is from the Nikon School DVD.

Actually there are several videos with tips about making videos with your Nikon SLR. If you have a Nikon and you don’t know much about video like lens selection, image stabilization or other topics, these might be just the thing you need for some summer videos with your Nikon camera.

Zacuto’s DSLR Shootout Webisode 2 is up

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Webisode #2 is up at Zacuto’s Great DSLR Shootout. This current episode is a comparison of light sensitivity of the DSLR Cameras from Nikon, Canon and Panasonic. Check this episode out to see the Nikon D3s and Canon 1D Mark IV at insanely high ISOs.

Great stuff.

This year’s lineup: Canon 7D, Canon 5D Mk II, Canon T2i, Canon 1D Mk IV, Nikon D3s, and Panasonic GH1.

DSLR Video Shootout from Zacuto at Skywalker Ranch

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The good people at Zacuto put together this year’s DSLR shootout comparing Kodak and Fuji movie films with video footage shot on some top DSLR cameras.

This year’s shootout used the Canon 7D, Canon 5D Mk II, Canon T2i, Canon 1D Mk IV, Nikon D3s, and Panasonic GH1.

They compared the same footage shot with each camera. To take away as much variability as they could, they used Zeiss lenses on all the cameras.

The commentary about each was provided by top film industry people. The Zacuto site says “The test results were projected in a 2K theatrical environment at three screening locations: Stag Theater at Skywalker Ranch, LucasFilms Ltd., AFI (American Film Institute) Theater in Hollywood and the FilmWorkers Astro Color Timing Theater in Chicago. Hear commentary from the screenings by top ASC, Hollywood, Indie Film and Event & Convergence Photographers.”

I have to say that I generally hate film and digital comparisons. I love them both. I have an admitted bias towards film, but I think digital is very cool. I loved this comparison though. Not so much to see if digital beat film. (So far, it didn’t, but it’s pretty darn close.) I really liked seeing the kinds of tests that top notch people in the industry performed, the observations they made, and the awesome video they shot. I’m looking forward to more episodes of this.

My only regret is that I would have liked to have seen as many Nikon models as Canon, but other than that, this was very good.

Video Review of the Nikon D700

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

After the last comparison review, I wanted to present a review specifically about the Nikon D700. This is Nikon’s beautiful FX camera. For those of you that are into reviews, this should make your day.

Comparison videos of the Nikon D700, the D300 and the D90

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

I found these videos that compare the features and handling of the Nikon D700, the Nikon D300 and the Nikon D90. Obviously, all of these cameras are exceptional machines, but there are some differences in the handling of each of them that are worth checking out.

The first video gives a pretty detailed comparison of the functionality of the backs of each of the D700, D300, and D90 cameras.

The second video gives a comparison of the top, side and front of the Nikon D700, D300, and D90 cameras.

Photography Site of the day – www.suaudeau.eu

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

I found a very nice photography site, www.suaudeau.eu. The only stumbling point for me is that it’s in French. My knowledge of French is not so good. Wait a minute. Don’t leave yet. Google makes it easy to see a translated copy of a site.

The translated www.suaudeau.eu home page.

There is some really excellent content here, such as this guide to Minolta cameras

That page has individual pages for particular Minolta models. It has history of Minolta SLR and rangefinder cameras. It also has repair tips, lens disassembly instructions, and finder changing instructions for the SRT 101.

The histories are excellent. I like the Minolta Manual SLR history.

Check out these Camera, Shutter and Flash Service Manuals
There are service or user manuals for Leica 2M, Leica 3f, Minolta Himatic 7Sii, Minolta XD-11, Minolta X-700, Minolta X300, Minolta X500, Minolta XE, Minolta 360XP, Minolta SRT 101, Nikon F3, Compur, Pentax K1000, Pentax Spotmatic, Pentax Spotmatic II, Canon EF, Canon EOS 30, Canon EOS 500, Canon F1, Canon Canonet GIII QL 17, Obturateur Prontor 1, Obturateur Prontor 2, Olympus XA, Yashica D, Yashica Mat 124 G, Yashica Electro 35
The caveat is that not all of the manuals have English translations in them.

Along with the manuals, there is a very nice Repair page

This site is well worth checking out, especially for the service manuals and repair section. If you’re a Minolta person especially, there is some great stuff here. Highly recommended.

Please note that if google comes back and says a page is too big to translate, such as the manuals, then just view the page without the translator. Most of the links I provided are for the translations by google.

John Titterington Camera Repair and CLA

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I want to make sure that I track good camera repair people so I list them here.

I have seen many posts referring to the repairs made by John Titterington on Minolta cameras. Though he apparently repairs several brands.

I don’t know him. I haven’t used him, but I haven’t seen anything negative about him. And most importantly, he restores Minolta cameras.

So, if you need a repair to a camera, you might check him out.

Also, here is a link to his auctions of restored cameras on ebay. He usually has some nice looking cameras there.
